Vin number - Heaviest optioned L88 known in existence. NOT FOR SALE
Chevrolet only
built 116 of these monstrous L88 Corvettes in 1969
- total Corvette production for that year was 38,762.
Almost all of these legendary L88's were raced
and destroyed or modified beyond recognition at some point during
the past 40 years. Less than a handful
authentic examples, from any year, remain today holding their
real original motors and complete drive train, fewer of these Vettes
were produced in the more desirable 'open top' convertible version.
This particular Lemans blue L88 roadster is the only example
like it known in existence today and has survived completely
unscathed. This pure time capsule, encompasses all of the above and
remains fully unrestored and in all original
untouched condition. When the L88 was introduced in 1967,
Chevrolet did everything possible to keep these high
powered beasts a secret from the public and tried to exclusively
market them to affiliates of Chevrolets competitive racing teams. The factory
went as far as lying to the public claiming these cars had
significantly less horsepower than the potent L88 motor actually produced topping
out near 600hp. By 1969 the legendary secret had leaked out and the
factory discontinued them later that year. Multiple factory options
ordered on any L88 was almost unheard of. These cars were expensive
at the time and purely ordered for speed and horsepower. That
makes this particular L88 even more mind numbing to think
about. No L88 on the planet except this Lemans blue
convertible has the bragging rights of being ordered
new with 14 factory options, making this Vette the heaviest
optioned L88 known of any ever made, documented with the
original order form and window sticker!
What is truly stunning about this L88 is
the fact that the car is fully documented from day one. This
L88 has over 30 pieces of
astounding original paperwork including original letters from
Nickey Chevrolet in Chicago as well as all original order forms from
General Motors Over Seas distribution in Seoul South Korea kept by the first
owner a young American soldier. This L88 has its original title,
protecto plate, window sticker, tank sheet, every official order
form from the factory and numerous typed and hand written
letters between the original owner and the factory from 1968 thru 1969.
Most likely the best documented L88 from new and with no restoration
only routine maintenance, this car has an amazing natural patina. Never
under a spray gun, the body never removed from the frame and the engine
never disassembled or rebuilt, this car retains 99.9% of its
original gorgeous factory applied blue paint requiring
only a couple minor rock chip touch ups over the
years. 100% of its original factory installed interior
in perfect condition, all of its original chrome and a 100% perfect untouched engine
compartment. Notable Corvette collector and master
Corvette judge Dr. Paul Noble from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
babied the car for 27 years of single ownership protecting this L88
completely, in total unrestored, time capsule condition. This L88
was never raced and always cared for from the first day of
delivery and is probably the finest unrestored time capsule,
survivor Corvette in existence today! The car was ordered new by
23 year old Army Captain Richard Johnston Thomas of Marietta
Georgia through GM overseas distribution and then delivered to
him out of Chevrolet's St. Louis facility in June of 1969.
Besides the mandatory
options a customer had to order, this Lemans Blue roadster has the
convenience of tinted glass, alarm system, shoulder harness, black vinyl
hardtop, engine block heater and the very rare, rear window defroster and
defogger. This L88 has all its original components, including
original head and rear lights, convertible soft top, exhaust system,
engine belts & hoses, spark plug wires and dated shock absorbers.
It rests on an NOS set of four original tires and the rear end is
a 4:56. Unbelievably, this car has only 19,000 original miles.
Amongst its many awards over the years, adding to it's pedigree, the
car was invited into the very prestigious Bloomington Gold special collection
in 1988, the special collection again in 1998 and again this
year 2008, the 20 year anniversary - current
custodian, notable Corvette collector, 25 year old Evan Metropoulos
in Beverly Hills, California set a world record price for a
69' Corvette when he purchased this car. Evan was very
proud to lend his rarely seen gem to be one of only 6
extraordinary Vettes from the 60 beasts on
display, inducted into the Bloomington Gold Corvette Hall of Fame.
